Dr. Gaetano Esposito was born in Naples, on August 3rd, 1951. He attended junior high school at “G.M. Bianchi” Institute, and high school at “San Giuseppe Colasanzio” Institute, in Naples. In 1970 he got a bachalaureat in classical studies at Liceo Classico Statale “G. De Bottis” in Torre del Greco (Naples).
On November 11th, 1977 he graduated a the University of Naples Medical School as Medical Doctor, with a thesis on “Electrocution: Clinics and Therapy”, afterwards published as a monography.
He attended the Chair of Surgical Semeiotics, directed by Prof. Francesco Mazzeo, University of Naples Medical School, from March 25th, 1975 to November 4th, 1977 as intern student, and from November 5th 1977 to November 4th 1981 as intern doctor.
During that period, besides General Surgery, he particularly devoted himself to the field of Reconstructive Surgery, working with Dr. Alberto Scrocca. See Att. 1)
Studies and researches performed at the Chair of Surgical Semeiotics produced some scientific papers, published in national journals (from n° 31 to n° 37 and n° 27). On February 1978 he was intern for one month at the Division of Plastic Surgery and Surgery of the Hand, Ospedale Civile di Legnano, directed by Prof. Ezio Morelli. ( See Att. 2)
From March 1st, 1978 to August 8th, 1978 he attended a practical training at the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Burns Center of Ospedale Niguarda Ca’ Granda, directed by Prof. Luigi Donati, achieving an excellent final mark. (See Att. 3)
After such a training, and after the Public Competition for two places as Plastic Surgery Assistant at Ospedale Regionale V. Fazzi, Lecce, Dr. Esposito obtained the professional qualification of Assistant in Plastic Surgery. (See Att. 4)
From May 1st, 1979 to December 31st, 1980 he attended the Unit of Plastic Surgery at Ospedale dei Pellegrini, Naples, directed by Prof. Manfredi Tramontano, specially devoting himself to the therapy of burn injuries. (See Att. 5)
From November 1st, 1979 to November 31st, 1980 he trained in Anaesthesia and Resuscitation at Ospedale SS. Annunziata, Naples, to improve his skills in the therapy of burns, also obtaining the professional qualification as Assistant in Anaesthesia and Resuscitation. . (See Att. 6)
On July 15th, 1981 he post-graduated in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the School of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, directed by Prof. Guido Radici, University of Milan. . (See Att. 7)
During the post-graduation school, from 1978 to 1981, he trained at the Division of Plastic Surgery of the Cancer Institute of Milan (Prof. G. Lovo); at Ospedale di Niguarda (Prof. L. Donati); at Ospedale Civile of Monza (Prof. E. Caronni). On March 1981 he was intern for one month at the Burns Center (Department of Plastic Surgery and Burns Center) of the “Ciudad Sanitaria de la Seguridad Social Francisco Franco”, Barcelona, Spain, directed by Prof. Jose Antonio Banuelos Roda. . From November 1971 to December 1985 he attended – as a volunteer up to May 1984, and thereafter as a contract doctor – the Chair of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of the University of Naples Medical School, directed by Prof. Nicolò Scuderi. . (See Att. 9)
During this period he studied and researched in very important areas of the discipline, publishing papers and actively participating at scientific meetings of the field. (Published on national journals from n° 38 to n° 47, and papers at national congresses from n° 79 to n° 85)
He actively contributed to the monography “Plastic Surgery” [Ed. PICCIN, Padua, 1985], by Prof. Nicolò Scuderi, and to the Italian edition of Volume II of “Surgical Treatment of Facial Trauma”, Kazanjan et Converse [Ed. PICCIN, Padua 1988]. (See Pubb. N° 28 and n° 29).
During the “Spring Symposium”, in 1983, he was appointed member of the Italian Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery. . (See Att. 10)
From June 1987 he is member of the International Society for Burn Injuries. . (See Att. 11)
From December 19th, 1985 to August 31st, 1991 he worked as House Officer of Plastic Sugery, at the Division of Morphofunctional Rehabilitation, at the Rehabilitation Medical Center of Campoli M.T. I.R.C.C.S, Fondazione Clinica del Lavoro of Pavia, under the supervision of Prof. Nicolò Scuderi, Director of the Chair of Plastic Surgery at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”.
From September 1st, 1991 to December 30th, 1993 he worked as Senior House Officer of the Division. (See Att. 12)
During those years he mostly devoted himself to assistance and research in the field of rehabilitation as regard to the problems of patients with burn injuries, with decubitus ulcers and affected by obesity. He was particularly interested in the Instrumental Semiology of Hypertrophic Scars and Tissue Expansion. Such scientific activity has produced papers and communications at many national and international symposia, and many published papers on national and international journals.
In the field of surgical therapy of decubitus ulcers he developed new personal techniques, which results were published on peer-reviewed international journals, such as “Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery”, “Scandinavian Journal of Plastic Surgery”, etc. These published papers were widely quoted in the international literature.
From April 27th, 1991 to May 10th, 1991 he was at the Clinic of Plastic Surgery in Brno, directed by Prof. Barinka, where he attended the “6th International Course on Muscolocutaneous Flaps Dissection” (See Att. 13 and 14)
From August 24th to October 14th, 1992; from December 12th to 25th, 1992; from January 18th to March 4th, and from June 11th to August 5th 1993 he directed the Burns Center at Ospedale Neves Bendinha in Luanda, Angola, within the international cooperation health project “Burned war victims in Angola”, funded by EEC and run by the International Center of Cooperation to Development. On December 31th, 1993 he has been employed by the USL RM/7, now Roma C, as Senior House Officer, at the Burns Center of the Ospedale S.Eugenio, where he works now as Director of the Pediatric Burns Unit.
On June 1995 he attended a training at the Burns Center of the “Centre Hospitalier St. Joseph & St. Luc”, Lyon, France.
In the academic year 1995-96, he teached at the School of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, University of Tor Vergata, Rome.
He actively participated to the activities aimed to the the quality improvement (VRQ), attending many up-dating courses organized by the ASL Roma C.
He is member of the Group for the Improvement of Quality in Artificial Nutrition, and of the Nutritional Team of S. Eugenio hospital.
